William Edwards Deming (October 14, 1900 - December 20, 1993) was an American statistician, professor, author, lecturer, and consultant. Deming is widely credited with improving production in the United States during the Cold War, although he is perhaps best known for his work in Japan. There, from 1950 onward he taught top management how to improve design (and thus service), product quality, testing and sales (the last through global markets)[1] through various methods, including the application of statistical methods.
Deming made a significant contribution to Japan's later reputation for innovative high-quality products and its economic power. He is regarded as having had more impact upon Japanese manufacturing and business than any other individual not of Japanese heritage. Despite being considered something of a hero in Japan, he was only just beginning to win widespread recognition in the U.S. at the time of his death.[

There are a great number of correct answers available for this question and one thing that comes to my mind is the involvement of Dr. William Edwards Deming in Japan's economy from 1950 on. Deming's contributions to the Japanese economy were so profound that at the headquarters of Toyota there is a bigger photo of Deming than the founder of Toyota, Toyoda Sakichi. Deming taught Total Quality Management in Japan because after WW II he couldn't find an audience in the US willing to embrace his ideas. It wasn't until the 1980s when America started to warm up to his philosophies due largely to an NBC documentary titled "If Japan can... Why can't we?" Deming's initial involvement as it pertains to WWII came after the war when he was asked by the Department of the Army to assist in the 1951 Japanese Census after which he received an invitation from the Japanese Union of Scientist and Engineers, thus beginning his legacy in Japan. Japan also blew up some American naval ships and that's how America got involed
