There was much pressure from Stalin to open a second front in Western Europe to divert Hiter's armies to fight in Western Europe. It was decided to do a full landing beach assault on the coast of France after the southern part of Europe was controlled after the fall of Mussolini in 1943. D Day was scheduled for the Spring of 1944 but bad weather kept delaying the invasion until a weather break on June 6, 1944. The assault was the largest sea and land invasion in history up to that time and was successful as Hitler's panzer divisions arrived too late to stop the allied advancement. This was in large part due to a miscalculation of where the invasion would happen and the fact that Hilter was sleeping when the invasion reports at Normandy first surfaced in evening of June 5th. He and only he could authorize the use of the panzer divisions. Had they been ready to counterattack the invasion would have been penned down for months and the length of the war extended.
they hoped that Germany and the Soviet Union would cripple each other
By opening a second front the Allies would be able to draw off German strength from the Eastern Front and help relieve pressure upon the Russians .
During World War II, Joseph Stalin, the absolute ruler of the Soviet Union, wanted (and even demanded) a "Second Front" in the West for several reasons. Primarily, he sought relief from the German forces that were attacking the Soviet Union: the opening of a "Second Front" would force Germany to withdraw troops from the East in order to meet the threat in the West.
During World War II, the Second Front long-desired by the Allies was finally opened in 1944 in western Europe. This additional front against Germany was started with the successful amphibious invasion -- code-named 'Operation Overlord' -- of Normandy, located in the north central portion of France along the Atlantic coast.
World Wars I and II were fought against the Germans on the western front. Whereas the Western Front in the First World War was very static (only moving a few miles each way during the course of the whole war, the western front in the Second World War lasted less than a year with the crushing defeat of France

The United States and Great Britain entered the war in 1941. President Roosevelt promised to deal with the Germans before the Japanese. Following through with his plan required opening a second front. This was done on August 19, 1942.
Operation Barbarossa changed the scope of World War II for Germany because it resulted in the opening of second front in Eastern Europe.
Are you referring to World War I or World War II? In World War I, Germany was the reason for the opening of the Western Front, by the invasion of Belgium in order to attack France. In World War II, Germany, again, was the reason for the opening of the Western Front. First, they attacked Denmark and Norway (which would be more considered a Northern Front) which was the first contact of German and Allied troops (the British deployed into Norway, but retreated). The Germans then attacked the Benelux countries and France, all falling in a matter of weeks. In both world wars, the initial front was the Eastern Front (on a German standpoint).
Hitler felt that his position on the continent was unassailable by Britain, so he felt free to open the second front.
Front opening and top opening freezers are simply different designs depending on the type of space where they will be used.
