In many cases the European Powers built up the infrastructure of their colonies, mainly so European colonists could live and work there. Their presence also stopped many potential tribal conflicts from occurring, as long as the imperialists occupied the country. However, the European powers usually practiced a system of segregation, which excluded the native people from engaging in or benefiting from the occupation of the imperialists. The bulk of the country's natural resources were extracted for the sole purpose of enriching the coffers of European nations, while the people in the countries often languished in poverty.
