King Phillip of Spain attacked Queen Elizabeth of England because he wanted her to become Catholic. England won and Spain lost there control over the seas. Meanwhile, other countries had more time for exploring. They set up colonies in the Americas. They did this because they heard reports of gold and silver there and they wanted some. The rulers sent colonists out to colonize and told them to send back what they found, this was called mercantilism.
Queen Elizabeth told the English to go out and set up colonies. The settled in Jamestown, Virginia and they named the state after there virgin queen.

The name was- and still is, Virginia. Jamestown was one of the colonies IN Virginia.
The difference between the Jamestown government and the Plymouth was that the Jamestown weren't so friendly with the Indians, the men didn't work, disease was spreading among them, and the water they drank was impure. Also they only came with men to Jamestown and then after John Smith came to govern, that's when the ladies finally came and they established a colony.
Roanoke Island, in what was then considered Virginia but is now North Carolina, was the first English settlement. Unfortunately, none of the colonists survived. Jamestown VA was the first permanent colony. The first English colony in North America was established on Roanoke Island in 1585, in what is now North Carolina. A second colony, the so-called Lost Colony, was established two years later, but vanished. A third colony was established at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607.

There can be two answers to this question. The classical answer is Jamestown, as being the first successful colony established by the British, the other being the colony established in Roanoke (spelling?). This colony mysteriously disappeared for no reason at all, thus the reason for the two way answer.
Jamestown was the first settlement in what became Virginia (named in honor of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth) and Plymouth was the first settlement in what would become the Massachusetts Bay colony.
