Typically there is no explosion in a "blown motor". It means the engines freezes up which could happen for a number of reasons, such as inadequate fluid levels like no oil or coolant or internals can malfunction like pistons and such. When a true blow up occurs it is typically in high performance vehicles, when vehicles are pushed beyond their limits and permanent damage warps the actual engine block or other vital components and the engine literally can't move. Another thing that could occur is fuel leak fire or even worse an engine with a nitrous or high octane fuel (i.e. not reg. 87 unleaded, racing fuel of high octane like 105) which is much more flammable than regular fuel.
