It won't work. The slip rings work in conjunction with the brushes to connect a rotating part of the unit with the stationary part. We need to couple current into and out of the rotor, and without the slip rings for the brushes to ride on, we can't do that, and the motor won't work.

The same as simply not connecting the field.

The armament field will have no counteracting field to keep it under control, as such the rotor will start spinning out of control, exceeding the max RPM's of the motor.

The windings will start melting, or in a worst case scenario in high powered motors the rotor will rip out of the stator case.

How many Slip rings in synchronous motor?

If the synchronous motor is single phase then there are two slip rings & if this motor is three phase so the slip rings are three in number. Correction; I have never seen a single phase synchronous motor. It would cost more that it was worth. A synchronous motor has a separately excited field. If the excitation comes from a stationary DC source it has 2 slip (collector) rings. A brushless induction motor has no slip rings because the exciter armature rotates and so do the rectifiers. A permanent magnet motor, used with variable frequency drives, is another type of synchronous motor that has no slip rings. A three phase motor with 3 slip rings is a Wound Rotor motor. Wound rotor motors are variable speed motors that were used for such applications as bridges and cranes before variable speed drives.

What will happen if the slip ring connection is open?

The motor will not work. The slip rings are used to in conjunction with the brushes to deliver a current to the rotor. The set of rings are a complete electrical circuit within the motor. In a synchronous motor the rings are used to supply voltage to the rotors pole coils. In operation these coil poles follow the rotating magnetic field in the stator.

Why are the slip rings needed in dc motor?

Slip rings are needed to connect a rotating armature to external fixed circuits.

Which of the following isn't a component of DC motor?

slip rings

What is an alternative to carbon brushes in an ac motor?

slip rings

What is the function of a split ring commutator?

The split rings cause the direction of the magnetic field in the armature to change direction as the motor rotates. If this didn't happen the motor would not rotate. Slip rings can be used for an AC motor which causes the direction of the magnetic field to change with the AC waveform.

What is the basic difference between carbon brush of AC slip ring motor and carbon brush of Direct current commutator motor?

The only difference between slip rings and commutator is that commutator can change the frequency where as the slip rings can not do it.

How do you slipring motor is convert to inducton motor?

With a synchronous motor shorting the slip-rings together should make it work as an induction motor although perhaps not to an optimal degree.

Slip rings and split rings?

Slip rings are used in AC while split rings are used in DC generators

Purpose of slip rings?

slip ring is connect on shaft of motor to collect current from commutator without any complicate connection and with use of it resistors can be insert in circuit and therefore speed control of motor can easily achive

What is the need for slip rings?

Slip rings offer a means of connecting a rotating winding to an external circuit. Slip rings are used when an a.c. output is desired.

How to find stator to rotor turn ratio of a slip ring induction motor?

In open circuit, find the ratio of voltages across the slip rings in rotor side to the applied stator voltage.
