Very dangerous idea. I saw a Animal Channel program on hippos and they are not cuddly happy animals. They guard their turf and will attack if they think someone or something is on their turf. Hundreds of people are killed each year by hippo attacks in Africa. They are large and mean.
I like totaly agree with you i saw the same thing! also there are more hippo attacks then tiger attacks!!!!!!!!!!!!:o

NO, it is not safe to swim with hippos, as a matter of fact it is probably safer to go swim with crododiles than hippos.
