Subaru engines are not "interference" engines, that is a valve won't crash into the piston and destroy the engine. But the engine stops running. Right now. This could be disastrous if, say, you're pulling out in front of a big truck. Why take the chance? When you do have the timing belt replaced be sure to also replace the water pump. There is very little additional labor but if you don't you will be back in there within 6 months replacing the pump. Good luck! --Ken
