Holes in the outer walls are generally fatal.
Holes in the inner walls cause blood to flow in various wrong directions. (This causes murmurs.) The results vary from minor and inconsequential to life-threatening. Most are amenable to surgery.

โ 12y agoall babies have a PFO (patent foramen ovale) it usually closes up quickly after birth, if it does not it needs to be surgically repaired. if its a small hole (pfo) it won't do much damage but if its a big hole VSD (ventricular septal defect) it can be fatal.

โ 12y agoBecause when they are in the womb they do not breathe air, they get oxygen from the mother so the lungs can be bypassed and oxygen can be passed through the hole and circulated through the rest of the body. when a baby is born the hole closes so they can get oxygen from the air through the lungs.

โ 10y agoIt will require detailed investigation to assess the site and size of the hole. Small holes may close but the child will need regular Hospital follow up and serial heart scan to assess the size of the defect and may require surgery at a later date.
