The choice of the word holocaust was not specifically Jewish. In fact many Jews prefer the Hebrew word Shoah(catastrophe) because holocaust can have religious implications.
The people known as the Roma (they prefer that word over the derogatory "Gypsy") suffered between 500,000 and 600.000 deaths at the hands of the Nazis in World War II. Most of those were at Auschwitz._________________They most certainly do not prefer to be called 'Roma'. The Holocaust refers to the murder of about 6 million Jews by the Nazis in World War 2. Sometimes other victims of Nazi mass killings are also included, in which case the total number of victims is much higher than 6 million. The term The Holocaust in this specific sense has been in widespread use since the late 1970s. Before that it was referred to as the Final Solution [of the Jewish Question]. This was not a very satisfactory term as it was a translation of the Nazis' own term for the genocide. The word holocaust (with a small h and without The) means: 1. great destruction, especially by fire; 2. whole burnt offering.Because of the religious connotations of the word, some people prefer to use the word Shoah (Hebrew for great calamity, disaster). In addition to the Jews, the Nazi killed many other groups. Some people include these other groups, some don't.The modern, specific sense of Holocaust was popularized by Elie Wiesel from the late 1950s onwards. Please see the related questions.

I'm Jewish = I am a member of the Jewish religion and the Jewish family. The Jews are a small minority = Jewish people make up a tiny percentage Many people prefer to say 'Jewish' rather than 'Jew'. Historically, 'jew' has been defined negatively. It's nicer to ask someone: 'Are you Jewish?', as opposed to 'Are you a Jew?'
I wonder if there's some confusion here. Around 1980 the word Holocaust replaced Final Solution, which was the Nazis' own term. Since the word Holocaust has religious connotations (and also means whole burnt sacrifice) some people prefer the word Shoah which means calamity in Hebrew.
