Somebody eventually would have arrived in America if it had not been the Spanish. It likely would have been the French, English, or Chinese (the Portuguese were quite content to keep going around the Horn of Africa). If the Europeans had arrived, colonization would have occurred as it did in the British and French colonies. The British repressed Native Americans, but did so with less zeal than the Spanish. The French actually tried to trade with them and establish positive relations. The Chinese do not have any historical colonies from that time period, but the Chinese tended to form vassal-type relations with other states or tribes instead of outright conquest. They would have likely colonized similarly to the French, but even less obtrusively.
