In 18th Century Ireland, a cook would bury a ring in her mashed potatoes on Halloween night in efforts to bring love to the person who found the ring. Some other superstitions tell of adding a three penny bit, a button, a heart shaped charm, a shell, and a key. All the lights are turned out and the party guests have to dig out the charms with a spoon or fork. The one who finds the ring will marry first; the three-penny bit signifies wealth; the button, bachelor/spinsterhood; the heart,passionate love; the shell, long journeys; and the key, great success and power.
