Good possibility its your intermediate steering shaft. Which is known as (ISS). It is a defective design by GM. GM is aware of the problem and has started working to correct it. there is a new steering shaft available from GM. Lubing it is only going to fix it for a shorter and shorter period of time. The only way to fix it for good is to replace the shaft with the updated one.
When you turn the steering wheel and hear a popping noise, it could be due to the power steering pump and a sticking valve so there is not enough hydraulic pressure. It could be caused by the steering linkage going out or low power steering fluid.
In a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue the fuse box can be opened by either using a screwdriver or your finger and placing it in the hole and popping it out. Even if you use a screwdriver on the panel nothing will be harmed. It will simply pop back in when done.
If the popping sound is more like you feel bumping in the steering wheel then its the I-shaft in the steering column. If the car is newer then check your warranty at the dealership, they will cover the replacement. I heard it was an intermediate steering shaft and cost around 130.00 dollars
probably the cv joints
have the ball joints checked soon, can be dangerous. Had that problem on my 02 when still under warranty(5yr/60K mile) and the dealer replaced the upper bearings on the front struts. Still running OK. I had the same problem with my 2001 Aurora 4.0. Diagnosis was both front springs were broken and had to be replaced. Not a cheap repair (~$CAD 700.00) but totally unsafe to put off.
The wheel has a whole in it.
Inspect the steering components, suspension, and brakes.
Popping noice on my 97 bravada
probably means you are running out of gas
Check for worn or loose steering components: Tie rod ends; drag link; pitman arm; idler arm
Nothing. Popping is a physical change.
