It can be many things. As the car is 14 years old, you need to just perform a complete cooling system maintenance. With the heater in the hot position, drain the system and flush out all the old coolant. Replace the thermostat, and pour in a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. Bleed all air from the system. Be sure and check the pump & cooling fan operation, and clean all debris from the outside of the radiator. If you are loosing coolant with no apparent leak, you possibly may have a blown head gasket. White sweet smelling smoke at the tailpipe, air bubbles at the radiator opening, or a milky substance on the underside of the oil fill cap is a sign of a blown head gasket. Stop driving the car until you have this fixed or you will do serious damage.
