You need to install a steering damper on it.
Check the front tires/rims for snow packed in them. That can cause it to be out of balance.
The transfer case....or '4 wheel drive'(front wheels)....is a completely different beast. The transfer case can be rebuilt for about $1000. Just had my transfer case rebuilt for just under $1k.

I'd start with the disk brake rotors. If one or both is warped it could cause the problem you describe.
Check the front motor mount.
depends on when it shakes if it shakes when you put on the brakes-warped rotors otherwise it could be ball joints, steering joints, wheel bearings or even out of balance tires
worn front end parts (steering or suspension) could cause a car to shake when appling the brakes.

There are a few different things which could cause wheel shaking and thumps when hitting a big bump. The most likely cause however, is that the struts need to be replaced.
