I know on my '94 it was the tie rods. They had come loose, causing the wheels have excessive play and vibrate. Be prepared for an expensive job if this is the case. Be aware that they will not balance tires or give a front end alignment if the tie rods are the culprit. They must be replaced first, otherwise the alignment will only hold until the first time you turn the wheel...which could be 5 seconds after you get in the car. Good luck. I love my Escort, otherwise I would not have sunk the money into it for the tie rods. They are great cars. Mine is my everyday driver. Usually shaking is caused by the wheel balancing. Take your car to a local Tyre and Exhaust garage and ask them to check the wheel balacing for you, in the UK this should cost no more than 30 pounds therefore expect to pay around $60. This should solve the shaking.
