The first thing you should try is replacing the fuel pump relay. It is very easy to do just open the fuse box under the enging and look on the bottom of the lid and find the fuse. I believe it is 18 and just replace it. They are like 13 buck at auto parts store. If that does not work try replacing the map sensor. it is located right behind the intake manifold. it is just 2 bolts but they are a pain to get out but it just takes a little time. If that does not work replace the fuel pump. Also i would replace fuel filter first because it probably needs done anyway and it is cheap and could be the problem. hope this helps
There can be several things that will cause your 2003 Chevy Malibu to run rough and not shift into fourth here. The probable cause is a lack of fuel. Due to a bad fuel injector.

The coldness
A bad cylinder head gasket.
You can tell if the transmission, in your 1998 Chevy Malibu, is going bad. If there is a whining or clunking noise. The transmission might cause your engine to install when you are stopped with your foot on the brake.
Check the Malibu crank position sensor and coil pack. One of these is the most likely cause of the loss of fire.
