Rough idle can be a vacuum leak. Your car is 10 years old, replace the vacuum hoses under the hood, and replace one at a time as to not get confused. The overheating can be a sticking thermostat, cooling fan not coming on as it should, or radiator clogged. Service the cooling system by draining the system, replacing the thermostat, flushing the system, and installing a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and distilled water. Check the operation of the cooling fan/fans. The fan should run continuously with the A/C on.
what will cause a Ford Taurus 1998 24 valve to overheat
The radiator cooling fan is most likely not working.
The Taurus could overheat for several reasons. The coolant could be low, the fan might not be operating properly, or the engine could have a stuck thermostat.

Hey Dee ann==Not simply idleing the engine. If you had an extra load on it to cause it to overheat this could cause it. GoodluckJoe
have you flushed your radiator or changed the thermostat it could be stuck
A likely cause is an internally restricted radiator.
The idle for the 97 Taurus could be too low. The transmission bands could be sticking some as well, not allowing the transmission to come out of gear during idling.
Could be no air running through it such as sitting in traffic or slow moving
Any coolant leak can cause an overheat.Any coolant leak can cause an overheat.
The most likely cause is a faulty engine crankshaft position sensor.
Yes, low coolant will cause it to overheat without the AC; that is not the only reason that will cause overheating however.
