it could be ur planet gears in side the tranny. that means u need to rebuild ur tranny. i have a 90 chevy silverado 4x4 350 700r4 tranny and had to recently have the tranny rebuilt. it cost about $950.00. my planet gears wouldnt even move we tryed everything. take it to ur local tranny guy and good luck I had a similar problem and it was all in the "kickdown" cable but it is called an "indent" cable on 700R4's and the like because they directly control shifting. Depending on the adjustment of the cable the tranny will stick in first, or shift only when you rev it out or even shift too soon. Up on the bracket where the cable connects to the throttle body you will see the plastic square part that fastens to the bracket and there will be a little round and ribbed part sticking forward a bit and then the cable itself comes out. It is the rounder, ribbed part that actually slides forward or backward and this is how it is adjusted. Most people say to push the round part inward (toward the firewall) as far as you can push it without breaking it and then slowly open your throttle all the way and it should self adjust. I personally had to keep adjusting mine a little at a time fronward or backward and test drive it after every adjustment until it shifted correctly. If it is stripped you might to get a new indent cable and install and adjust it as I have just said. Good luck.
