A common high pitched squeal is caused by a loose drive belt. Most modern cars have a wide, flat serpentine belt that wraps around several accessories, like the water pump, the alternator and so on. That belt is kept in constant spring tension so it never has to be adjusted and is not likely to make any noises.

There may also be a smaller "V belt" that drives one or two other accessories. The v-belt is narrow and may have to be tightened once in a while. If it is slipping, it will create a loud squealing noise, and this usually happens when accelerating from low speeds and the engine is cold. It should be tightened right away because each time it slips, it heats up, and heat is what causes rubber components to fail. Most belts are essential so a belt failure can leave you on the side of the road.

It may stop squealing as the car warms up because the rubber gets more flexible when it is warm.

Check an automotive manual or have a mechanic check it/tighten it. It should be a pretty easy and cheap job.

Belts should not be over-tightened either. Over tightening can cause the bearings in the accessories to fail.

In some cases Power Steering pumps can cause strange noises especially when cold. Check that the power steering pump has the correct fluid and correct fluid level. Many modern cars are very picky about what kind of fluid should be added.

What is noise made by?

Noise is made by vibrations in the air. The more intense the vibrations the higher pitched the sound is. For example if something vibrated once in a second it would be very low pitch however if something vibrated one billion times a second it would be very high pitched.

What irritating sound is caused by irregular vibrations?

So-called "fast vibrations" cause "high pitched" sounds. Very fast vibrations cause very high pitched sound. Slow vibrations cause low pitched sound. You get the picture. The "speed" of vibrations relates to the frequency of the sound that is produced by them.

What makes high frequency sounds?

There are far too many things to name them all, and also it depends upon your definition of high pitched. Generally, something that is vibrating at a fast rate will cause a high pitched sound, such as the reed of a clarinet. The faster it vibrates as air is blown into the instrument, the higher pitched noise it will emit. The particles that vibrate perpendicular to direction of sound produces high frequency sounds.

Why is a high pitched noise coming from under the hood of my 1996 Toyota Camry?

The most common cause behind a high pitched noise under the hood is the drive belt. if it is worn out or loose, the wheels will slip, creating the noise. I would check to make sure the tensioner isn't bad. If it is, this could be causing the looseness. If the tensioner is fine, then just replace the belt.
