What would cause a rapping noise on a kawasaki 750 brute force transmission?

I have a 1982 750 ltd, that makes noises in the transmission. So I took the clutch cover off, and found that the big primary gear on the back side of the clutch basket will move about 1/4 of a inch, separtly from the the clutch basket. So I took the basket apart, and it looks like their are three machined grooves, made for this purpose. I don,t know yet if it,s supossed to be that way or not. I can,t imagine that it would be, with out cushioning bumpers or something like that their. That,s all I know right now. The motorcycle shops are closed on monday,s in Alaska. Will find out later...
