Posible reasons: * Damaged Vehicle speed sensor ( VSS) Located on top of rear diferencial * Bad connection on: ╟ VSS Harness... ╟ Programmable Speedometer / Odometer Module (PSOM) Located on dash... ╟ PCM Computer Harness... ╟ All around grounding sistem... * Some times bad ground can cause the electrical sistem to pull ground from another circuit conected ( PSOM ) and change the resistance drasticly. Make shure all wires and all connections are clean before jumping on conclusions, remember... it's been out for 14 years. good lock... Raúl C.

This is the case even when the speedometer looks analog. Likely a bad speedometer is the cause if it does not move as the speed sensor is used for other functions and would trip the "check engine" light if it was bad. the speedometer is part of the instrument cluster and likely you would need to change the whole thing.
