There are many possible reasons.. Some common one's are
1) Incorrect lighting/temperature
2) Use of tap water for drinking
3) Desease, Mites
4) Burns from heat rocks, heating pads
5) Bieng dropped :P
A corn or rat snake would be good. I'd go with corn snake. They're esey to take care of, as far as snakes go, and you can likely find one in your local pet store.

Corn snake because they are much more friendly and will only bite if you antagonize them. Even then they aren't poisonous. A ball python on the other hand, is very large and it will squeeze. To them you are just another prey for dinner. So definitely get a corn snake.
