A full charged battery has a higher voltage than a discharged battery and the voltage will travel from a higher to a lower voltage point. In dry air, voltage will "jump" at 10,000 volts per inch. Thus when you get close to the second battery, within a fraction of an inch, you will receive a spark. Notice to receive this spark you already had one side of both batteries already connected. The best is to connect the negative sides of both batteries first as should your jumper cable become too close to a spark plug wire it will most likely go to the frame of the car and not you! Spark plugs are typically 18,000 volts!
The battery on the car you're jumping is too weak. Let the donor car charge the battery for about 10 minutes before you attempt to start it. If that does not work the battery has a dead cell and needs to be replaced.d
It could maybe, if you happen to do it improperly, you would see sparks and the wire would heat up and maybe explode, but i don't think it will. :D
First, it would cause a lot of sparks, since the fire would short circuit the iPod's inner circuitry and cause many sparks, most likely setting fire to what's around it. Then, a pretty big explosion might follow after the sparking since the fire would explode when it reacts to the battery acid in the iPod's battery. This would blow the iPod apart into many pieces, setting fire to all that is around it, and most likely within a 10 foot or greater radius.
As with many electronic devices they can merely fail over time. I have heard it said that jumping the battery can cause the ECM to fail, I don't know that to be true. Too high a battery voltage could cause failure of the ECM. That might be caused by the alternator putting out too much voltage when charging the battery.
If you have sparks coming out of this pipe call a licensed electrician or your local building inspector right away.

Dead cell in battery, replace it.
