Low of power steering fluid is one possible cause. I urge you to have this looked at by a professional. Loosing your power stering in a turn can cause a serious accident. Do not ignore this as it can be very dangerous. Funny cause Ion's have electric steering and have no fluid resevoir. The problem is in the motor unit, and it is not seerviveable. You will likely need an EPS motor assembly. (Electronic Power Steering)
Resevoir is on right fender, black plastic tank. Unscrew lid CLOCKWISE. ATF recommended.
Aside from the obvious, Power Steering Pump resevoir; and depnding on the model year and engine, typically the location is on driver's side down low. There's a black plastic twist know with a white plastic resevoir. With the engine off, twist counterclockwise and pull off; the dipstick will show the level. Power Strg fluid, or Auto. Trans. fluid works.
Steering fluid leak.
That is your power steering resevoir. You have to get that fluid from the VW Dealer only - anything else will cause significant problems with the system. If it isn't low, then you don't have anything to worry about. The cap unscrews and has a dipstick to check the fluid level. The owners manual doesn't make any mention of the resevoir. Maybe they don't wany you messing with it is why, or maybe they just spaced giving you that info.
Low power steering fluid or defective power steering pump.
the power steering resevoir, MAKE SURE the vehicle requires power steering fluid, some use transmission fluid instead. If your unsure take it to a lube center and ask them to do it you. In the 2004 Chevy Impala with the 3.8L engine, the power steering pump is a sealed unit. It does not require fluid to be added. Also if you have to replace it, it is not an easy job. The power steering pump is above the transmittion and behind the center of the engine.
same as brake fluid resevoir
