Did you ever find out why? My son just ran out of fuel with the same situation.
If the diesel fuel "gels" then yes the filter will need replaced.
The oil sending unit is located on the top of the turbo on the 94 turbo diesel 7.3
it sounds like you need to replace your fuel filter.. sometimes the lines connecting to it are corroded and also have to be replaced.. I replaced the lines on a 89 cheyenne and the lines to the filter all the way to the sending unit, including the sending unit all needed to be replaced because of rust.. hope you have more luck than i did Good luck it doesn't matter if air gets in the line, the sensor will register air and block intake from the filter.. the computer will balance it out.
