The shift cable usually doesn't break. The bushings on the shifter inside the cabin have been known to break, or the clips that hold the cable to the tranny fall off allowing the cable to come off the tranny. I would check these points first before replacing the cable.

Check the switch on the brake pedal that allows the transmission shifter to move into gear. If this switch/cable is broken the shifter doesn't know the brake is pressed so it will not allow shifter to move. It is a safety feature... a good one too.

(Word of caution here!!! the shifter mounting assembly is made of thin cast white metal. if you have a seized cable and try to pull shifter very hard. It will break ! This GMC I believe that it have a release cable under the dash. Where the brake pedal attach with it. Every time you insert the key in ignition and turn over, you still have to press the brake pedal that help release the cable to free the shifter. The cable the run from brake pedal to shifter could be about foot long or 3 feet long. It depend on the kind of shifter your car have. When the brake is press, it pull the cable to release the locking device on the shifter so you can shift it. If it does not release, check the cable on the brake pedal and the shifter for damage or defect. If it still good, check the primary cable that runs from ignition switch to brake pedal that help release the secondary cable which I explained above.
