Wear and tear deteriorate timing belts over time. Yours may need to be replaced more frequently if you drive in the upper states. It also may be a leak contaminating the belt. Oil and coolant will significantly shorten the belts life.

A damaged timing belt would stop the engine from running probably with no warning. If you should have an "interference engine" it would basically destroy the engine.

Does a 2005 buick century have a timing belt or a timing chain?

That would be a timing chain for this car.

What do you do if the timing belt breaks and how do you know if that is what happened?

If you think your Timing Belt broke DO NOT try to crank your car, if you continue to crank you car with a severed timing belt you will cause more damage. The only way you can tell for sure if the timing belt broke is to remove the upper timing cover and inspect the belt. If you see a naked cam sprocket your timing belt has broken and you will most likely need a top end engine rebuild.

What would cause no compression when starting the a car?

Either your timing belt is stripped or broken. In order to have compression the camshaft and valves need to be in time with the crankshaft. If it has a distributor cap then remove it and have someone crank the engine. If the rotor does not turn then the timing belt is bad.

How often does timing belt need replaced on a 2004 4cylinder Kia?

My 2004 kia optima timing belt teeth fell apart at 93k miles. I would replace it at 80K. System: while your driving the car, the car would turn off while running. Don't try to turn it on to many times cause it can cause other problems. Get it tolled away. thanks

What could cause the timing to be off other than the timing belt on a 1998 ford escort zx2?

If your timing is off, it's most likely because of the timing belt. I had this problem when I changed my timing belt and took my car apart over 10 times. You have to be dead-on precise when fitting the timing belt. If you are off one notch your timing will be off. It's that precise.
