White smoke out of the exhaust is a sign that the head gasket is bad and is allowing water (coolant) into one or more of the cylinders. If the smoke decreases when the engine warms up, this may mean that the gasket is expanding when the engine warms up. Check for coolant in the oil by looking at the oil on the dipstick. A sure way to tell is to tell is that the oil will be a milky color and overfull.

What could cause white smoke to sprew from a muffler?
The white smoke is probably steam. If it does it only in the mornings or right after startup and then dissipates, it is just condensation evaporation which is pretty normal - especially in cold or rainy weather. If it does not dissipate and is a continuous flow, then the vehicle may have a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head or some other condition that is allowing water/coolant to get into the combustion chamber. 1. Condensation (car has been sitting for a period of days/ weeks without being started up.) 2. Crack in the motor head or a blown-out head-gasket that is allowing coolant to leak into the cylinders, thus burning, and causing a white smoke to escape from the muffler. Exhaust may have a "sweet " smell.Black smoke is usually attibuted to the float bowl receiving to much fuel, in other words its is "loading up." Or, running extremly rich. Blue smoke, on the other hand usually indicates burning oil in the cylinders.
