most likely a short in the tumbler
There are 3 components involved in the starting circuit that sends power to the coil of the starter solenoid. 1) ignition switch (it's in the steering column - turns when the key turns); 2) Starter Relay (located under the hood in the relay/fuse box); 3)Park/Neutral switch (located on the left side of the transmission).
I had a problem recently where I started my truck normally and let it idle for a minute when my starter engaged itself (I hadn't touched anything). For my problem, the starter is always engaged when the key is in the run position. I spent the last two days deermining the problem. First I replaced the starter/solenoid - same problem persisted. Second, I replaced the ignition switch - same problem persisted. Third, I replaced the Park/Neutral switch - that fixed the problem. Turns out there was a short in the Park/Neutral switch that was sending power to the Starter Relay whenever the key was in the run position. If you are stuck somewhere, there is an easy workaround. Locate the Park/Neutral switch (left side of the transmission - black plastic enclosure that has two connectors plugged into it). The larger of the two connectors (has 6 or 7 wires) has a yellow wire and a purple/white wire. Cut them both (leave at least an inch of wire on the connector so you can splice it back later). Strip the two wires coming from the harness and splice them together. This workaround enabled me to get to a garage where I could replace the Park/Neutral switch in a slightly warmer environment than the outside temp of 15 degrees.
Check the starter solenoid and the starter itself. Either one could be stuck and causing the constant engagement. Check the flywheel for damage after you fix the problem.
If the starter is spinning but not engaging the flywheel it will not turn the engine over. This is due to the starter drive not engaging properly. The starter could possibly be rebuilt, but it may wind up being cheaper to just replace it with a remanufactured unit from your local parts house.
its not that bad to bolts starter comes out disconect your battery first after the starter is down you will be able to take the to leads off the starter pretty easy job drive safe
A transmission that is not engaging fully when in drive might need a new shift solenoid. There is also a chance that a band is stretched or broken inside the transmission.
sounds to me like it the starter drive not engaging completely have your starter checked i think you might need a new one
check the shift linkage from the dogleg to the transfer case.the bolt on the linkage may have come out causeing it not to lock it
If the starter motor is spinning but not engaging it won't help to hit it with a hammer. The "starter drive" portion of the starter is shot. If all you get is a click or no noise at all, you might get lucky by hitting it, assuming the battery and all connections are good. This technique may work once or twice if the starter is at fault. The starter is located under the vehicle. You can follow the path of the positive battery cable from the battery to locate the starter. The positive battery cable will pass thru the starter solenoid on the inner fender then continue down to the starter.
Incorrect fluid level,Linkage out of adjustment, Internal trans failure,
Could be the starter drive is not engaging or perhaps you're using the wrong holes for your flywheel. If you have a 153 tooth ring and have the starter in the 168 tooth position, the gears would not mesh. Did it ever start? if it did ,most likely the starter drive is broken, or the pinion ,or flywheel are stripped of their teeth. Bendix is broken, Starter too far from ring gear, broken bendix throwout fork.
Could be starter drive not engaging xcompletely Could be a bad starter drive Could be a chipped or broken tooth on ring gear (fly wheel) Try turning engine manually (large socket on crankshaft) and then try to start - -if vehicle does turn over probably a chipped or broken tooth - if not, possible above starter problems
