The owner would put signs up and anyone who found the slave/slaves were expected to bring them back to the South or to their owner. If they got back to their owner, they were beaten,or whiped in front of the other slaves.

One slave lead a revolt against his owner. He was captured, had his ears cut off and was then executed by being hung. All of this was done in front of the other slaves to say 'this will happen to you too if you try this.'
