If all the Great Lakes dried up, the climate would be such that North America would be an extremely arid desert from central Canada to the southern tip of Texas and from Boston to LA. Keep in mind that the Great Lakes is fully 25% of the fresh water supply of the Earth. It feeds and is fed by roughly 75% of the river systems in North America.
In short, by the time the Great Lakes dried up, most if not all the animal life, including humans, would be dead.
Seeing as the Great Lakes are all inter-connected (except Superior), for one to dry up, all the others would also have to. This is NOT expected to happen ANY time in the forseeable future. Water levels WILL drop dramatically, but they WILL NOT dry up.

There is no record of Europeans having explored as far as the Great Lakes by the year 1600. The First Nations would have had their own names for the Great Lakes. One of their names for Lake Superior was Gichigami.
That would be Lakes Ontario and Erie.
Lake Ontario is the eastern most of the Great Lakes and Wyoming would be farther than South Dakota.
Government thought it would be a good idea to have Indiana because it has access to the Great Lakes and has a high percent of power to the Great Lakes.
