If you put the wrong harmonic balancer on theres probly a 99% chance your going to damage the internal parts of your engine such as bearings ect.. most harmonic blancers run around the 75 % mark brand new so its worth it to get a new one if yours is begging to fail
A replacement balancer could have a wrong keyway. The vehicle could be a half year, meaning that the balancer is listed for one year newer or older vehicle, or the balancer could have been made wrong.
First remove the old one using a puller that you screw into the harmonic balancer there is a key on it so you can not put the new one on wrong just use the bolt that holds the main pully on to push the balancer on
The crank and balancer are keyed. It only goes on one way.
About the only thing that goes wrong with the factory balancer is the elastomer wears out and the outer ring can move. This would make it hard to set the ignition timing since you wouldn't know where tdc is.
There is no cam sensor on a 93 3.1. Just a crankshaft sensor....which is located behind the harmonic balancer. WRONG! it does in Fact have a cam position sensor! its underneath the intake plenum!
== == I do believe if you hear a knocking noise that your crank shaft could be failing. Which means you will need a new engine. Have it checked out. Replace the harmonic balancer they will make a bad knocking noise. When you start it and the oil light goes out and it knocks, this is what is wrong with it.
Try changing the crank sensor it worked on my 1993. Behind the harmonic balancer.
On my 93 Buick Century, 3.3 V6 engine I went to the junk yard and got one off another Century and the rings were not similar. The SAME crank sensor with matching Harmonic Balancer put on an engine with a different configuration will NOT read correctly. Put the wrong harmonic balancer on the engine and not match crank sensors and the balancer rings will destroy the sensor! I tried putting a matching set on my Buick from another Buick with a different pattern and the car would not start. So , I'm back in the same position looking for a matching set. Make sure to OBSERVE the clearance as you torque down the Harmonic Balancer Bolt as you put it on. DON'T just ram it up on the crankshaft w/o observing the clearances of the interruptor rings going into the Crank Sensor. Only have .025 clearances! I watched mine from the top down as I slowly tightened the bolt. Hope this helps. David, in TN
I had a 94 buick regal that did tis. It was a 250 dollar repair job. It was the piece that spins the power accessory belt on the engine. I think its called a harmonic balancer
My 99 gs would stall on turning or just going down the road. Only happened a few times.Car would also not crank from time to time. Had a check engine code and was the crank shaft sensor. Replaced sensor and all is well. Harmonic balancer is a sob to remove so I had it done at a shop, labor was 100.00$. Part was 27.00$. Not Bad. However if your car has not cut off while running you will not have a code! Coil pack and ignition module can be checked at orilyes auto parts, maybe others too. If its not the two above it could be the crank shaft sensor, cam sensor,or the harmonic balancer its self. The balancer has a rubber piece that will fail and cause the timing to go off. Hope this helps
the quotient would be wrong
