Basically, you don't. The filter is not easily available in the CD4E automatic transmission. It doesn't have a bottom pan, so it would need to be disassembled to get at the filter.
You have to remove the transmission pan or just take it to a shop and they can suck out the old and refill it fairly reasonable. The reason being is that even if you take the pan off the filter is inside the transmission and cant be changed.
It's a FORD Contour.
There is no drain.
The 5 speed manual transaxle takes Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid ( according to the 1996 Ford Contour owners manual )
Hi there, A transmission for a Contour won't fit in a Taurus. However, I am in need of a 1997 Contour Transmission. Please let me know how much you want for it and I will buy it from you. Thanks, Stephen 720-298-8561

The filter on the CD4E automatic trans is NOT user changeable - it's way up inside and doesn't require regular / routine changing.
My Contour didnt have a transmission filter. It was just one of those inline things that needed to be back flushed.
The Ford Contour was produced from the years 1995 to 2000. The front pump transmission seal in a 1998 Ford Contour is located very close to the camshaft.
If it's an automatic, this is likely the transmission breather tube, it should reach up and hook to a clip right around the battery tray, do not plug it.
Inside the transmission under the pan.
Yes and it is electrically controlled. Apply a charger or jumper battery and you can get it out of park.
The transmission plug on a 1995 Ford Contour is located on the side of the pan. It allows for fluid to be quickly drained during maintenance.
