One of the reasons why a Tahoe motor would skip and pop could be due to a loose timing chain. Some of the other causes of a loose timing chain are rough idle, sluggish performance, and the sudden change in the engine performance.

possibly a loose belt, or a worn belt try sprying some belt dressing on it, if it stops replace your belts soon. belt dressing is a baind aid not a cure.
The trans mission IS probably going out. This is a well know defect in the 2002 Tahoe. Google it.
