If the engine idles ok but dies when you press the gas pedal, check the operation of the choke and throttle baffles, that the fuel filter is not clogged, and that the fuel pump is operatong correctly. If everything checks out ok, then the problem is emmissions related (possible clogged catalyctic converter, muffler, etc).
Occasionally the gas pedal will have some resistance when you press it. You could check and lube gas pedal, gas cable, and throttle itself.
Broken or worn control cable? Bad throttle body?
Open your hood and have someone press and release the accelerator pedal while you look for movement at the end of one of the cables on the top of the engine. That is the throttle.
press to release. says so right on the pedal.
maybe fuel filter or coil throttle/pedal pressure sensor according to my obd2 test kit for my '99. Try hooking up an obd1 and see what the diagnosis is.
press the pedal down as far as you can and as it goes up...it should release it...
I just dealt with this, it is 3 things, your Throttle position sensor, your map sensor, and the fuel pump,
all cars with abs breaks do this!! but if you feel it in the pedal then you have bad front rotors!!
The throttle position sensor is on the throttle body. That's the part of the engine that controls the amount of air allowed into the engine. To find the throttle body, follow the air intake routing toward the engine. The throttle body is the part that sits on the intake manifold. To find the throttle position sensor, follow the throttle cable to the throttle body. If it helps, have someone press down and release the throttle pedal while you're looking for the throttle body/position sensor. The throttle cable causes a shaft to turn, that's the part that controls the air coming into the engine. The throttle position sensor is connected to that shaft.
If the gas pedal is conpletely limp, the linkage to the throttle body is disconnected somewhere. I need more details; send to bulruq@yahoo.com and I'll try to help.
98 Chevy cavalierIt might be a stick shift
Throttle body has excess carbon build up or bad idle air control motor. Clean throttle body and/or test and replace AIC motor.
