The Modified Mercalli Scale

historians believe there was a pendulum inside and when an earthquake hit, the pendulum swung causing it to hit a lever which would cause a dragon facing the direction of the quake to drop its copper ball into the mouth of a toad below
ok
There is no need to capitalize earthquake.
the chinese used the seismograph the find out the direction of an earthquake. in the first model, there were some small marbles inside a jar. when the earthquake hit, a marble would fall out of the jar, and in the direction of the quake. the chinese belived earthquakes were a sign of future evils.
The Modified Mercalli Scale
A seismometer (or the older device called a seismograph) records the seismic waves from earth tremors.+++There is a difference there: a seismometer would simply register instant vibration; a seismograph records the vibrations with time so shows the whole picture.
By using friction. Without it, they wouldn't have anything so the two will have also faults along the friction

A seismograph is an instrument that measures the intensity of earthquakes. Seismograph technology would refer to the science involved with the design or improvement of the instrument.
Since a seismograph is a device used to measure the magnitude earthquakes, someone who studies earthquakes would use it.
the first seismograph had about 8 dragons on the outside of the egg shaped pot. the dragons had balls in their mouth that were pure metal. if theground shook, the ball would drop from the mouth, and go into a metal frog shaped cup.
A seismograph is placed under the ground. Somewhere not to close to the surface, as when something on the surface moves, then it would be recorded on the seismograph. Something on the surface that moves can be a vehical driving along the road.
The first step in this method is to collect several seismograms of the same earthquake from different locations. Then, the seismograms are placed on a time-distance graph. The seismogram tracing of the first P wave is lined up with the P-wave time-distance curve, and the tracing of the first S wave is lined up with the S-wave curve. The distance of each station from the earthquake can be found by reading the horizontal axis. After finding out the distances, a seismologist can locate an earthquake's epicenter.-New Boyz
