There is no such term as Sunni Islam. Islam is the religion given to humans. All the Prophets (May peace be upon them all) preached Islam. The sect that believes in the holy Qur'an, the sayings of the holy Prophet (SAW) and follow the path of the Companions (RAU) of the holy Prophets (SAW) are called Ahl-i-Sunnat wal Jama'at, commonly known as Sunnis. The Shiias broke off from the main stream of the Muslims in the last days of the caliphate of the third Rightful Caliph Hazrat Usman (RAU).

According to the Sunnis, their version and understanding of Islam is the proper one. The rituals and traditions of Sunni Islam began with Mohammed's first revelations of the Qur'an in Mecca before founding the Islamic Community of Medina, both in Saudi Arabia. However, Sunnis believe Islam to be the true religion since the universe began that was only completed and corrected by Mohammed.
According to the Shiites, Sunni Islam is the majority group who decided to intentionally deviate from Mohammed's will and system of organization. The Shiites, therefore, see the beginning of Sunni Islam to take place in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, when Caliph Abu Bakr was elected by Shura in contrast to accepting 'Ali as the appointee of Mohammed's, just after the Prophet's death.

They also believe that throughout history, God sent humans numerous prophets to tweak people's beliefs back to monotheism whenever they would go astray, and that Muhammad (frequently known as the "founder of Islam") did not really "found" Islam, but merely reiterated the universal belief regarding God. Muslims believe that he was the last prophet in a long chain of prophets including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Jesus, and many others. So in that sense, Islam never started in any country, but has been the universal religion of all humanity throughout history. Muhammad, however, was born in Mecca, and he began his preaching in the lands on the Western coast of the Arabian Peninsula, in modern-day Saudi Arabia.
