Alan Shepard's first flight was on May 5, 1961. It was the first spaceflight by an American. Yuri Gagarin of the USSR went into space 3 weeks before Shepard to become the first man in space. Shepard's second flight was aboard Apollo 14. He and his crewmates, Stuart Roosa and Edgar Mitchell were launched toward the moon on January 31, 1971. On February 5, Shepard piloted the lunar module "Antares" to the most accurate landing of all the Apollo moon landings. 33 hours after landing, Shepard and Mitchell left the lunar surface. They landed in the Pacific Ocean on February 9, 1971. Shepard was the oldest astronaut to land on the moon and the only one of the Original 7 to do so. Shepard died on July 21, 1998. Because he was a former Navy avaitor, he requested that his ashes be scattered at sea.

Second Man in Space and Lunar GolferAlan Shepard (1923-1998) was a US astronaut and a CDR (later RADM) in the US Navy. He was the first American into space, and the second man in space after Yuri Gagarin of the USSR. He later became the fifth man to walk on the surface of the Moon, and the first man to hit a golf ball on the Moon.On May 5, 1961, Shepard flew his Freedom 7 capsule on a sub-orbital space flight as part of the Mercury program. On February 5, 1971, Shepard and fellow Apollo 14 astronaut Ed Mitchell became the 5th and 6th men to walk on the Moon. The reason for the 10-year interval between his missions is that he was treated for an inner-ear condition.
