There have actually been three. The first, probably on October 8, 1849, the day after Poe died, was attended by only a handful of relatives and friends because it was unannounced, and it was only a day after Poe died. The second memorial service was on November 17, 1875 on the occasion of the change in his burial spot from near his grandfather to near a street entrance in the front of the cemetery grounds, and it was attended by the poet Walt Whitman among others. The third memorial service was held on October 10, 2009 in two locations, and it included readings of the writings of many of Poe's contemporaries about Poe by actors dressed for their parts.
