GM did not invent the air bag. An American John Hedrik and a German Walter Linderer patented a compressed air system in 1951. Ford actually came out with the first air bags in 1971 on an experimental fleet, followed by GM in 1972. The first car sold to the public with an air bag was an Oldsmobile Tornado in 1973.
