Opinion:Herod did to the male infants of Bethlehem what he did to countless others elsewhere - ordered their murder. Herod was a known for his widespread violent atrocities that Josephus mentions in general terms - Bethlehem was but one very small fish in the bloodthirsty reign of daily killings, hence would not have been singled out from the much larger picture for mention.

Matthew 2

16Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

Nobody knows. The event is not recorded anywhere except in scripture, which generally isn't big on exact dates.

We know that if it happened it can't have been after 4 BC, because that's when Herod the Great, who is supposedly the Herod that gave this order, died (the Herod that presides over one of Jesus' trials is a different Herod).

According to Matthew's Gospel, King Herod feared that the baby Jesus would somehow supplant him as king, and had all the male infants of Bethlehem killed in an episode that has become known as the "slaughter of the innocents". The Matthew nativity story is seen by scholars as a incredible, implausible, far-fetched fiction.

Some have pointed out the clear similarity of the "slaughter of the innocents" story to the Old Testament story of the order of the pharaoh to slaughter all the infants because he feared the baby Moses. They say that Matthew created a story designed to compare Jesus to the early patriarchs. This included giving Joseph's father as Jacob, just as in the Old Testament, and the flight to Egypt. Historians have pointed out that the Jewish historian, Josephus, never mentioned Herod's slaughter of the infants, although he most certainly would have done so had he heard of it.

We can not, with justice, say that Herod really did order the deaths of the young infants.

No one knows. The event is only recorded in scripture.

The one thing we know for sure it that it wasn't after 4 BC, because Herod the Great died then.

Who commanded all new born sons to be killed?

The Book of Exodus says Pharaoh King of Egypt commanded that the male children of the Israelites be killed. Exodusdoes not identify the pharaoh in this story.Matthew's Gospel says Herod the Great, in a more limited sense, commanded the male children two years old and younger to be killed in the town of Bethlehem.Scholars have long realised that the similarities in the two stories arose because the author of Matthew's Gospel wished to draw parallels between Moses and Jesus.

Is it true that the wise men came and to see Jesus?

Yes it is true that the wise men came to see Jesus . As History states that King Herod ordered all boys below two years to be killed as the wisemen cheated King Herod.

When did Herod kill the babies?

A:There is no historical evidence that King Herod ever killed any infants. Even the Jewish historian, Josephus does not mention such an episode, although he documents everything he could record to the detriment of Herod. Scholars believe the nativity account in Matthew's Gospel, where this story is told, is only a literary invention with no historical basis. They point out that the author of Matthewhad drawn several parallels between Moses and Jesus, so the story of King Herod killing all the babies under two years old parallels the Old Testament story of the Pharaoh killing all the babies under two years old.

How many years younger was rsinoe than Cleopatra?

There is an estimate that Arsioe was ten or eleven years younger than Cleopatra. We do not have her date of birth, only the date or year that she was killed, which was in 41 BC. Cleopatra was 28 at the time.

What year did King Herod order the killing of baby Jewish boys?

A:The works of the first-century Jewish historian, Josephus, would seem to be the best resource for this. Josephus, like most first-century Jews, hated King Herod and would have written anything he could to further undermine the reputation of Herod. Yet, strangely, Josephus is completely silent on this one subject. Luke's Gospel is not only silent on the deaths, but seems to preclude the account altogether. The reason for this is clear. Most biblical scholars regard Matthew's story of Herod's Slaughter of the Innocents as a fiction written to draw a parallel between Jesus and Moses, with Herod killing the baby boys under two years old just as the pharaoh had killed the baby boys under two years old in earlier times.A:It is accepted to have taken place in 2 B.C.

When were baby boys born to the israelites killed?

Matthew's Gospel tells us that when King Herod of Palestine heard of Jesus' birth, he declared that all Jewish boys under the age of two years old to be killed. Jesus' estimated time of birth was approximately 4 B.C., so this order was likely carried out up to a year after Jesus' birth.

Why did king Herod wait until Jesus was two years old to look for Him?

AnswerThe Bible does not say that King Herod waited until Jesus was two years old before he looked for him. Matthew's Gospel, in which this story appears, merely says that when Herod realised that the magi were not returning, he ordered all the infants under two years old to be slaughtered. This has led some to believe that Jesus could have been up to two years old. John Shelby Spong (Born of a Woman: A bishop rethinks the birth of Jesus) says that Matthew was clearly writing Christian midrash. He had Joseph take his family to Egypt just as the patriarch Joseph had done, in order to escape death, and the killing of all male babies reflects Moses. On the view of Spong and many other biblical scholars, King Herod knew nothing of the birth of Jesus.

Did Cleopatra visit masada?

Probably not. Masada was built by Herod the Great between the years 37 and 31 BC. Now, even though Cleopatra visited Herod shortly before her overthrow, its unlikely that Herod would entertain a royal guest in a palace/fort that was unfinished.Probably not. What is the name of Herod that wanted baby Jesus killed and the name of Herod that crucified him Jesus?

I am not certain of the question. The answer to the question as asked seems simple - Herod is the name of Herod. But I suspect that the writer wants to ask something else. Maybe English is his/her second language. Please restate the question or ask it in your native language.Answer:Herod the Great (37 BC to 4 BC) was the Herod at the time of Jesus' birth and toddler years when the killing of the Innocence was ordered by him.Herod Antipas who was one of three sons, assumed the throne and ruled from 4 BC to 39 AD. He is the Herod of the time of crucifixion of Jesus - 31 AD.There was also another son given this name - Herod Archelaus who was just like his father the Great and was eventually killed by the Romans in 6 AD.The third and final son was named differently - Philip.

Joseph and Mary return to Israel after who died?

king herodComment: King Herod is correct, but which one? After Herod the Great died, he's the one that was alive when Jesus was born, then his kingdom was split three ways. One part, Judea was given to Herod Archelaus. This Herod was to be king over all Israel like his father, but Rome objected and he was granted only one part of the kingdom.Another son, Herod Philip II ruled the area north of Galilee (Luke 3:1) and Herod Antipas ruled Galilee and Perea. It was Herod Antipas who had John the Baptist beheaded.Herod the Great is the king that ordered the male children in Bethlehem to be killed who were two years and younger. (Matthew 2:16-18). At this time an angel warned Joseph to flee to Egypt. Then when Herod the Great died in 4 B.C. an angel told Joseph to take his family back home. But on the way back to Israel God warned Joseph about Herod Archelaus in Judea and so Joseph turned toward Galilee and bypassed Judea (Matthew 2:19-23).Herod Archelaus was a rotten ruler and in 6 A.D. (corrected chronology), which was his tenth year of rule he was exiled to Gaul (France) where he died later. So the answer to your question is Herod the Great.
