Socrates was a philosopher who died because of his differing opinions from those in political power. Socrates questioned wisdom, truth, and the fact of the Greek gods. He felt that wisdom had not been obtained by anyone around him, more specifically himself. In that, he publicly chastised those around him. He angered the powers that be and his view was one of absolute truth, that being, he felt that he was right and would die to defend his thoughts and beliefs, he was one of the first known martyrs. One of his many famous quotes, "The only true knowledge comes from knowing that you know nothing". He clashed with the people of Athens as his views were considered radical and he was known for "swaying" the young men of Athens to question the truth, question if they know what is really real. He chose to die even though he was unjustly convicted. He felt that it was his time to die and that it was wiser to die when he chose rather than to die in old age.....this is of course only a synopsis of the life of Socrates... for more information...look up the Socratic Method which will give you more information about decision making. Then Socrates died in 366 BCE. Useful info thanks :)
After being found guilty of "corrupting the youth and disbelieving in the ancestral gods" Socrates carried out his death sentence himself by drinking poison (hemlock). He died in 399 B.C. (See Related Link below, regarding the trial of Socrates.)
Socrates was seen as an enemy to the state because he was said to be influencing the young people in the wrong ways (they believed that he denied the existence of the gods). He was charged, and the agreement was that he would not poison himself, as punishment, unless he admitted that he had committed the crime.

Socrates is considered a hero because of his courage in challenging conventional beliefs, his commitment to seeking truth and knowledge, and his willingness to face death rather than compromise his principles. His philosophical teachings have had a lasting impact on Western thought and his unwavering pursuit of wisdom has inspired generations.
Socrates was sentenced to death by drinking poison (hemlock) in 399 BC. He was charged with corrupting the youth and impiety. Socrates accepted his sentence and famously refused the opportunity to escape.
Socrates believed that death was either an eternal sleep or a journey to the afterlife, both of which he considered preferable to a life of ignorance or wrongdoing. He also held steadfast to his principles and had unwavering faith in the pursuit of truth and the virtuous life, which gave him a sense of inner peace and courage in the face of death.

Yes, Socrates chose to drink a cup of hemlock as his method of execution after being sentenced to death. It was a poison that led to his death as per the sentence imposed by the Athenian court.
He believed it went against his values and that it was his time to die.
