Texas joined the Union in 1845. Here is some history about the circumstances under which it was admitted:

Mexico gained independence from Spain in the 1820s and began to accept foreign settlers into the region that is today Texas. Stephan Austin led a group of Americans into the region and the Americans quickly grew to outnumber the locals. In the 1830s, the Mexican government began to try to regulate these American communities, leading to rebellion. In March 1836, Texas declared its independence, yet Texans were initially quelled by Mexican forces, notably during the fall of the Alamo. Ultimately, Texas won and decided to seek entrance into the Union. Their entrance was delayed by Congress because Texas would most likely join as a slave state. In 1844, Congress officialled annexed Texas and Texas entered the Union six months later, in 1845, as a slave state. This deepened the issues of slavery in the United States and sparked the Mexican-American War.
