Yugoslavia became a country at the end of World War I and the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was known then as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. It became recognized globally as a country in 1922, and took the name the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929, later to be changed again to the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia when communists came to power in 1946.
Yugoslavia is a product, if you like, of WW2. It was united under Tito, a partisan leader in the war. Formerly it was a part of the Ottoman Empire as well as a part of the Austro/Hungarian Empire. It is populated by Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, Kosovans & Macedonians. I think Tito was a Serb and Yugoslavia was notable as not being a member of the Warsaw Pact, but was allied to Russia in the 'Cold War'.
In 1989, the Yugoslav Republic crashed because of the death of the leader (Josip Broz Tito, 1892 - 1980), then it became Serbia and Montenegro (1990 - 2006) until June 3, 2006. Montenegro became indapendent, so did Serbia. And that's how Serbia came to be.
It was during begining of XX century during Balkan wars, when Turkish empire was chased away from Balkan after five centuries of rule...Then an idea was born, similar to some ideas(American revolution or French Revolution), that all Serbs should live in one nation on Balkant. Serbs are Slavic in origin so some other nations also Slavic wanted to acheave their autonomy...So they saw how Serbs fight good, and than they use it to create South Slavic state or Yugoslavia...Ofcourse, King Alexander Karadjordjevich like every ruler was too gready, even if many inteligant politician told him not to make Yugoslavia...
The Albanians revolted against the montenegrins and ottoman Turks and declared an Albanian war of independence against the Montenegrin and ottoman Turks .After that cahos the ottomans kept on losing land in Greece and Albania became a detached ottoman province.and the montenegrins failed to capture scuarti (present day Albanian shkoder)then the Albanian armies started winning the revolt.after that the ottomans let Ismail qemali (the first Albanian leader) declare Albania independent at the Vlore assembly on November 28,1912.

The state of Yugoslavia started to break up in 1991 and ceased to exist about a year later. So to fly from Yugoslavia to Austria would require travelling across time rather than a country. You can fly from parts of what was formerly Yugoslavia to Austria without crossing any other country.
