Perhaps you refer to Thomas J. MARTIN (not "Marshall") who had a patent. A US Patent 125,063 for a "Fire Extinguisher" was issued to Thomas J. Martin on March 26, 1872. It described a pressurized water pipe for running spray nozzles inside buildings. It is nothing like what we now refer to as portable "fire extinguishers".
