First black drivers hired by Greyhound: Ulysses Bryant and Herman Ogletree were hired by Greyhound to drive routes in Orlando in 1964.

• In addition to the barrier breakers, the history association will also honor its founding president, State. Rep. Geraldine Thompson and builder and philanthropist Robert Mandell, an early Orlando-area advocate of Barack Obama.

Bryant the driver said he ran away from the vegetable fields of South Florida at 19 in the back of a Greyhound bus. Sixteen years later, he was driving the bus. Some whites refused to board his bus when they saw a black man behind the wheel.

"I could understand. It was an unusual experience for both people," said Bryant, 80. "My [white] coworkers weren't too happy to see me driving either. But I had to take a job. I can put up with stuff to feed my family."
