In a vehicle, a driving gear is the gear which is driven by the engine. The driving gear helps control the speed the vehicle is in.
No Harley Sportster has ever had a cam chain. The camshafts are gear driven, directly off the crank. No tension adjustment required.
A gear drive uses gears to drive the camshaft vs a belt or timing chain. Some bikes use a shaft drive vs a chain that is often confused with a gear dive.
there are marks on the timing cover that remains attached to the block and there are arrows on the cams. there is a pointer down by gear on crank and a dimple on gear align these marks
Chain drive, Belt drive and Gear drive.
chain drive
With a chain drive the driven wheel will always rotate in the same direction as the drive wheel, but in a gear drive the direction of rotation will change between drive wheel and driven wheel.
Sprockets and chain, gear to gear and belt drive are three types.
2.5 TDI has neither timing belt or chain, it has gear driven cams like the VW toureg 4x4
what year, what model, what size? However, almost all harleys; put something it between the primary chain and the clutch hub like a piece of hard wood. Remove the nut holding the gear by turning it counter clock wise. If the chain is good, you will have to remove the front gear and the clutch hub with chain all at the same time. If you can remove the front gear from the chain without removing the clutch hub, the chain needs replaced.
Belt Chain Drive Shaft ( Employs bevel gears ) Gear drive
Put simply... it's a circle of links that connects the drive gear (attached to the pedals) to the speed gear(s) - attached to the rear wheel. Rotating the drive gear (using the pedals) transfers the movement to the gear cogs on the rear wheel - which propels the bicycle forwards.
