Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany in 1933.
The last barrier to Hitlers complete domination of Germany was the President, an old Conservative from the Imperial period called Paul Hindenburg. When the President died in 1934, Hitler became Fuehrer.
He joined the party in 1919, and became its chairman in 1921. He became chancellor of Germany in 1933, and became the "Führer" ("Leader") of Germany in 1934.

Hitler was never president of Germany, however, he became leader of the Third Reich (the so-called Thousand-Year Empire) in the 1930's. Specifically, he was appointed Chancellor on January 30th of the year 1933. Immediately after then-president Von Hindenburg's death on August 12th of the year 1934 he proclaimed himself Führer, as well. He remained in power till his suicide on April 30th of the year 1945.
