When Maryland voluntarily abolished slavery in 1864, it adopted an apprenticeship system which forcing about 10,000 Negro youths into labor. It was not until 1867 that the system was banned. Some 4 years after the Proclamation of Sept. 22, 1862 did slavery in America finally came to an end.
